The palate- widening appliance expands the roof of the mouth.  This is done to better align the upper teeth with the lower teeth. Oftentimes, widening the palate widens the air passages allowing the patient to breathe more easily through his nose.  Also more room is created for crowded teeth to align better to each other.

The activation of the appliance gently separates the elastic membrane in the center of the palate.  Once the palate is sufficiently expanded, new bone tissue will fill the space. It usually takes 14-21 days to expand the palate. The appliance will remain in the mouth for 8 weeks after the expansion is completed.
