The surgically assisted fixed palatal expander is utilized in non-growing patients.

The palate- widening appliance expands the roof of the mouth. This is done to better align the upper teeth with the lower teeth. Oftentimes, widening the palate widens the air passages allowing the patient to breathe more easily through his nose.  Also more room is created for crowded teeth to align better to each other.

After the surgical procedure, the activation of the appliance gently separates the center of the palate.  Once the palate is sufficiently expanded, new bone tissue will fill the space. The amount of activation will be determined by the surgeon and the orthodontist. It usually takes 14-21 days to expand the palate, but the appliance must remain in the mouth 8 weeks after the expansion is completed.
